Abby Brenc![]() I'm happy to be fundraising for a non-profit near and dear to my heart - the Boston Bulldogs Running Club. The Bulldogs support people in recovery and those affected by addiction by providing a safe space to be active, get support, and support others. I caught wind of the Boston Bulldogs from a few people in meetings, and decided to check it out last spring of 2019.It was a game changer.

My brother Douglas died by suicide in March 2011 after fighting addiction to opiods and depression for much of his life - he was only 41 years old. From the night we got the call about his death, we decided it was important to be open, transparent, and honest. We didn’t want to feed the stigma associated with addiction and mental illness or sweep family history under the rug. While not in recovery myself, I have watched over the last five years as the Club has grown into a pillar in the local recovery community. What started as a small group run at the Chestnut Hill Reservoir in has transformed into a network that counts hundreds of members across chapters in multiple states. How does this happen? From my perspective, it all comes down to impact. The Boston Bulldogs provide an accessible, caring network for those in the recovery community, coupled with realistic wellness goals.

I would never have imagined running a marathon!! Well here I am, older, stronger and faster thanks to the Boston Bulldogs Running Club. I have been motivated to keep running by all of the Boston Bulldogs and of course by my own family. I have been encouraged by so many Boston Bulldogs who struggle daily with addiction or who have lost a special person from addiction.

![]() When I joined the Bulldogs almost 4 years ago, I didn't expect anything more than possibly finding a “running buddy.” There wasn’t much going on in my life at that point and most of what I did was done alone. I struggled for years leading up to that day with who I was, what my purpose in this world was, and where it was all supposed to go. I had periods of time where things felt like they were going well, but then they’d fall apart, yet again. Addiction ruled my life. In 2016, even after I decided to meet the Bulldogs, I didn't have much hope that it would really make a difference. But I showed up anyway, some of the best advise I’ve ever gotten. “Just show up” said Coach Mike when I first connected with him.

Patrick Caron![]() This year will mark my fifth consecutive running of the Boston Marathon, a race that has given so much to me over the years, and one where I hope I can give back as well.
My first time racing Boston in 2016 was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, and I have Jack Fultz, Mike Ferullo, and the Boston Bulldogs Running Club to thank for that. I got into running because my drinking was out of control and I needed something that would force me to start taking care of my body and health. So I figured I couldn’t really be hungover if I had to wake up early to run. That seemed to work for a bit but I couldn’t stay sober. I love running but I needed professional help to stop. I went into detox and did an aftercare program and got also got introduced to Alcoholic Anonymous. I quickly realized that this is a disease and the only way for me to stay sober a day at a time is to be with other people who are like me, who understand how I feel and help me with situations in my life so that I didn’t have to turn to drink. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE Caroline Goldman![]() I am grateful to be part of this extremely supportive marathon team!! My journey with recovery began just over 5 years ago. Before I got sober I was full of shame, regret and denial. After my two pre-teen daughters confronted me about my drinking on Christmas Day 2014, I knew I wasn’t fooling anyone anymore. I reached out for help and am currently living life with grace and dignity.
I was introduced to the Boston Bulldog Community this past fall when my friend Angi called me and asked if i was interested in being involved with a new Boston Bulldogs Running Club chapter coming to our hometown of Natick. I didn’t hesitate. I jumped in with both feet and she and I are not only helping to build weekly Natick runs...we are running the Boston Marathon together for the Bulldogs!! Your donation will help The Boston Bulldogs Running Club continue to provide an anonymous and safe community of support for all those adversely affected by addiction - those in recovery, their families and friends, the clinical community and the community at large. The Club promotes an integrated approach to wellness and self-leadership in recovery on a journey to discover the kind-hearted warrior and true potential within each of us. ![]() Quitting drinking at any age is difficult, but at 21 years old it was incredibly hard. There was not a lot to do socially that did not involve alcohol. Waking up early in the morning to meet running friends literally saved my life. It took me from the chaotic out of control world I had created for myself into recovery. Through the years running has been a constant in my life and my sobriety.

The Bulldogs Running Club has given me purpose and helped me to share the vision that recovery is possible and that people can change and do amazing things! Running with the Bulldogs has helped keep me sober and helped me carry the Bulldogs message of hope and self determination to others. I have now found the kind hearted warrior within. Running in the Boston Marathon will be life changing and a privilege I won’t take lightly. The Bulldogs provide a model of activity-based community support which is different from anything else I've experienced in recovery, and enriches my life in many ways. Ever since I started running with the Bulldogs in 2016, I have admired our teammates who ran Boston - I can hardly believe my good fortune to be on the marathon team this year myself. I'm proud, honored and excited to wear a Bulldogs singlet, and look forward to showing it off as I turn right on Hereford, then left on Boylston in the 2020 Boston Marathon!
