The Boston Bulldogs have launched a weekly pilot program at the Italian Home for Children, located in Jamaica Plain. From the Italian Home’s beginnings as an orphanage for Italian-American children whose parents were lost in the influenza epidemic of 1918, to today's mission to help vulnerable children of all races and nationalities who suffer from behavioral and mental health challenges thrive, the Italian Home for Children has been helping children in need for nearly 100 years.
This pilot program is providing kids at a vulnerable age, many of whom have been impacted by addiction, with a positive outlet for stress, a caring community of support from both peers and adults, an introduction to wellness and physical activity as a lifestyle, and an alternative to substance use, the Junior Bulldogs program seeks to address substance abuse before it starts.
In addition, the program combines running’s proven power to relieve anxiety and reduce stress, the feeling of support from both being mentored by coaches and other participants, the empowering experience of mentoring others, and a goal-oriented culture to provide a holistic wellness experience.
